Can I wear a hat?

How long after a hair transplant can I wear a hat, and other post op hair transplant questions!

So, you’ve had your hair transplant surgery. It’s gone really well, and you’re ready to get back out into the world again. Old habits die hard and you grab a hat to mask your surgery – before stopping, should you wear a hat after hair transplant surgery?

Trusting in your healing process

The short answer is that your head and scalp need some time to heal, so wearing a hat for at least two weeks after having a hair transplant isn’t a good idea.

The first few days after a hair transplant are crucial as your new hair follicles adjust to your scalp in the treatment area. Any type of compression can damage your new hair follicles, and have an impact on the effectiveness of your treatment. Following all Aftercare instructions from your medical team after your surgery will ensure that you don’t unknowingly damage any follicles or growth cycles.

It’s important too to avoid pulling any tight fitted clothing over your head in the early days after your hair transplant. Zipped tops or button up shirts are a better alternative for the first two weeks after a transplant.

Being careful during the healing stage

The healing stage is a key stage in your hair transplantation process. It’s the time when your newly implanted hair follicles get a chance to adjust within your treatment area, and it’s key to ensure that they are protected well during this time.

The most crucial part of the healing process is the two weeks directly after your surgery, when your scalp is still sensitive and you may be still experiencing some inflammation and bleeding.

Around this time it’s crucial that you forgo some daily activities that might aggravate your scalp and impact on your healing time. These include drinking alcohol, swimming, smoking and strenuous exercises. But don’t worry, once your initial two week post-surgery is over you can go back to these activities.

It’s advisable that you closely follow your surgeons guidelines around brushing and washing your hair at this time too, just to ensure that you’re giving your scalp its best chance to heal.

What does a good aftercare routine look like?

A good aftercare routine is one of the most important elements in your patient journey, in fact you’re setting yourself up for great results by committing to a great aftercare routine.

After your surgery, your Doctor will give you a set of recommendations and guidelines to follow. Following these instructions around sleeping, no tight clothing or hats, staying out of the sun and other recommendations will ensure that your treatment area has the time it needs to recuperate and heal.

As part of your patient journey in Total Hair Restoration Ireland you will get access to a comprehensive aftercare programme, giving you three post op appointments with your medical team to assess your progress.
